On beautiful Karragarra Island, surrounded by white sand beaches, tropical forest, and ocean views, home designer Robin has designed and built a compact house that delivers far more than its modest size or budget would suggest.
At just over 60 square metres, this cleverly designed small home feels open, calm, and wonderfully spacious. Large windows frame views across the water and mangrove forest, stretching all the way toward the Gold Coast. The home feels modern yet warm, simple yet deeply considered, and perfectly suited to island living.
To make building on an island possible, Robin designed the house himself and had it fabricated as a kit set. This allowed the materials to be easily transported by ferry and enabled him to complete most of the construction work on his own. Those smart decisions made a huge difference, helping him build this beautiful home for an impressively low cost.
But for Robin this move to the island is about more than just a house. It’s about creating a slower, more intentional life. On Karragarra Island, Robin has found a strong sense of community, a daily rhythm shaped by nature, and a lifestyle that feels a world away from city stress, despite being only minutes from one of Australia’s largest cities.

We had so much fun filming this tour! Karagarra island is just a stones throw from Brisbane, but it’s a place we’ve never been before and the journey there was incredible. It’s amazing how fast the city disappears behind you and you feel as though you’ve escaped to a tropical paradise. We live on one of the other islands, its not all sunshine and rainbows. It is cheaper than the mainland though. The prices of 10 years ago are no longer.
