VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
Most people picture tiny homes on rural land. Rae’s 420 sq ft ADU flips that script. Tucked behind a boutique apartment building in the middle of downtown, she walks to transit, galleries, and cafés, then comes home to a calm, efficient space that supports her life as an artist and educator. She rents this ADU for $1,300/month, proving urban tiny living can be practical, affordable, and inspiring.

In this tour, Rae shares how a thoughtful layout, durable furniture, and smart built-ins make city tiny living feel spacious, creative, and low-maintenance.

What you’ll see in this tour:
-Downtown ADU living: Why a tiny home hidden in a major city can beat long drives and zoning headaches
-Perfect rectangle layout: Open living/dining with a walled bedroom/office for outlets, storage, and a second mini-split
-One-wall kitchen, full appliances: Full-size fridge, dishwasher, double sink, long prep run, and a clear workstation endcap
-Built-ins that do the heavy lifting: Deep shelves with an appliance garage outlet, quartz built-in desk, platform bed with under-bed storage
-Artist-ready zones: Sewing nook with heavy-duty Singer, wall space for hanging in-progress work, and a calm reading/grading nook
-Walk-in closet in a tiny: Two hanging bars, straight-across shelving to avoid dead zones, and space for a rolling dress rack
-Large bathroom with a tub: High ceiling, operable window for ventilation, mildew-resistant paint, simple storage, hotel-style curtain height
-Why renting works: Maintenance peace of mind on mini-splits and systems, plus the flexibility to live where the art and students are
-Design on a budget: Solid wood, metal, antique/farmhouse pieces sourced secondhand to keep costs down and quality up
-ADUs as a city solution: How accessory dwellings expand housing options without leaving the urban core

Key takeaways
-Urban tiny living is viable: Walkability, transit, and culture—without sacrificing comfort
-Storage open space alone: Walls and built-ins create outlets, airflow zones, and places for tools
-Design for your actual life: Rae focuses on soups, tea, sewing, and teaching, then equips for those habits
-Renting is a strategy: Lower maintenance burden, faster service on critical systems, flexible future
-ADUs help cities: More gentle density, more affordable options, fewer long commutes

  1. Thank you to MPD Real Estate, Realtor Hanna Rivera, Maricio’s Stonecraft, and my family for supporting my tiny house dreams. My teacher mother loves watching and sharing tiny home videos and introduced them to me. If you have ever started over from scratch at midlife, you’ll understand the gratitude for the ups and downs. I feel changed in this new chapter and I’ve never been happier! Thank you to THT for letting me share my joy with the world.

  2. I love how she is NOT ashamed for renting! It works for HER! I can’t stand the weird debates about homeownership vs renting.

  3. Thank you for sharing your space and views. I thought of the Shaker song, Simple Gifts, early on:

Tis a gift to be simple
Tis a gift to be free
Tis a gift to come down
    Where you’re meant to be….

One reason I like this channel so much is the variety of places and people we’re privileged to see. I loved the oak table. And, as a quilter, your work spoke to me.

But I would go bonkers in your space and mine would evoke a similar response in you. I really appreciate that variability in people. Congratulations on finding this space that fulfills you and brings you such joy.

  4. Super cute and efficient. Sending her the best present and future! I love seeing other natural lady’s that are attractive and glowing.

  5. Nice beautiful home, you are intelligent and speak so well. Great attitude, expressive and intentional. ❤

  6. I wish they made it with more windows, but other than that, very cozy and well decorated home. Lovely…..

  7. You can find china cabinets for next to nothing since saving china for display and special occasion use has fallen out of fashion. They are made of wuality materials and because sizes and styles vary, you can find one that fits you needs and taste.
