VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
In this episode, Tiny Home Tours introduces viewers to a peaceful, downsized lifestyle on the water as Kate opens the doors to her beautifully renovated under-500 sq ft Toronto houseboat. After years of living downtown with roommates, Kate transitioned to a calmer, simpler way of living—one shaped by nature, smart design, and intentional choices.

For anyone researching tiny house living, downsizing after 50, or exploring houseboat homes as an affordable alternative, her story provides real-world insight into how small spaces can deliver big comfort.

Inside her 35.5’ x 13.5’ floating home, Kate shares:
• How she transformed a cramped, outdated kitchen into a bright, functional cooking space with upgraded backsplash, induction stove, custom cabinetry, and a built-in washer/dryer.
• Why houseboats can actually offer more storage than many tiny homes, from full pantry systems to seasonal storage tucked into artist-built cabinetry.
• What tiny-home downsizers can learn from weight-restricted design—why she keeps a small fridge, how she reduced clutter, and how she manages without blinds to stay connected daily to the dockside community.
• The monthly cost of houseboat life in Toronto, including mooring fees, electricity, water, and floating-home insurance—helpful for viewers comparing housing options.
• How a wood stove keeps her warm throughout harsh Canadian winters, plus her experience heating a small footprint efficiently.
• The hidden advantages of small-space living: cozy reading nooks, convertible dining-office setups, and meaningful routines like hang-drying laundry on the dock.
• Why tiny homes and houseboats can offer a unique sense of privacy, mobility, and freedom—especially for viewers looking to leave fast-paced urban living behind.

Upstairs, Kate shows viewers her full-height loft bedroom, complete with a marina view, egress windows, a rolling closet system, and an upper deck perfect for summer evenings. She also shares practical notes on marine surveys, purchasing a houseboat, and the zoning limitations that make floating homes rare in Toronto.

For viewers comparing tiny houses vs. houseboats, Kate’s lifestyle highlights:
• Both options encourage intentional living and minimalism.
• Both can offer lower costs than traditional urban housing.
• Both create a stronger day-to-day connection with the natural world.
• Both support aging-in-place when designed with storage, efficient heating, and manageable square footage.

As Kate says, the decision to downsize is rarely 100% certain—but for those who feel drawn to the water, prefer low-maintenance living, or want a gentler pace of life, houseboats can be a transformative option.

If you’re considering downsizing, exploring tiny homes, or curious whether houseboat living might be a fit, this tour provides real insight into daily routines, costs, design choices, and emotional benefits.

  1. Serene and luxurious. I think I have seen it a while ago, though I enjoyed this re-tour. Not a money-saving lifestyle, despite the compactness of it!

  2. The houseboats I’ve seen have engines and a way to move them on the water, like a boat. Does this one have that ability? Or is it really just a floating house? Whatever it is, it’s lovely and I’d live there in a heartbeat.

  3. Beautiful home and way of life! I just have to ask one question: Does the lake freeze solid in the winter ? if so, does it have any issues with the houseboat.

  4. When I lived tiny, my thought was nothing comes in unless something goes out!!! I am not practicing that as well today as I used to!!!😢😮😢

  5. Hi, absolutely love the place. What is below the kitchen cabinets? I know in a boat, every inch is used afectively, so I’m sure there is something there, but I can’t figure out what
