VIDEO DESCRIPTION:

Meet Don, who made the bold move from a 3,200 sq. ft. home to a cozy 372 sq. ft. tiny house—and never looked back. In this video, he shares how adopting a minimalist lifestyle and cutting unnecessary living expenses helped him achieve his retirement goals sooner. From a functional L-shaped kitchen to a surprisingly spacious loft bedroom, Don demonstrates that living small doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or convenience. Whether you’re investigating the benefits of tiny house living for financial reasons, a simpler lifestyle, or retirement planning, Don’s inspiring story shows what’s possible with thoughtful design and a willingness to embrace change.

Key Highlights for Downsizing Retirees
Financial Freedom: Don eliminated his mortgage, drastically lowered utility bills, and saved thousands in property taxes—freeing up funds for a more comfortable retirement.

Optimized Kitchen: With butcher block countertops, open shelving, and full-size appliances, Don proves that a small-footprint kitchen can be both functional and stylish.

Spacious Bathroom: A larger vanity and full-size shower keep daily routines convenient. Built-in features, such as soft-close drawers and a backlit mirror, maximize efficiency and space.

Smart Storage Solutions: Pull-out pantries, under-stair drawers, a built-in shoe shelf, and deep closets in the loft showcase creative ways to reduce clutter and stay organized.

Pine Interior Charm: Natural pine walls retain a warm, inviting aesthetic, while large windows flood the interior with light—maintaining a bright and comfortable atmosphere.

Spotlight on the Mr. Cool Mini Split
A standout feature in Don’s tiny house is his Mr. Cool mini split system, which handles both heating and cooling in the 372 sq. ft. space. Designed to be DIY-friendly, it can be installed with basic tools and minimal experience—saving you the cost of hiring a contractor. Mr. Cool units are also remote-accessible, allowing Don to adjust temperatures via a dedicated phone app or wireless remote. This convenience not only extends the life of his system but also cuts monthly bills by letting him fine-tune the temperature when he’s out of town. If you’re considering climate control for your tiny home, a Mr. Cool mini split offers excellent performance, energy efficiency, and a straightforward installation process.

Why Tiny Homes Are Perfect for Retirement
Significant Cost Savings: Reduced utility bills and zero or minimal property taxes mean extra cash to bolster retirement funds.

Less Maintenance: A smaller space means fewer repairs, less cleaning, and more time to relax and enjoy life.

Intentional Living: Downsizing encourages mindful consumption and decluttering, leading to a simpler, more fulfilling lifestyle.

Easy Mobility: Many tiny homes are built on wheels, granting flexibility to move or travel without leaving the comforts of home behind.

If you’re ready to explore a lower-cost, lower-stress path to retirement, Don’s journey highlights the profound impact a tiny house can have on your finances and overall outlook.

  1. I love this home. The shower is extra awesome. A small, handheld steam machine is good for cleaning it. Also, you could add a light that kills bacteria. It’s a lovely, cozy home. Thank you for sharing it. ❤❤❤

  2. Just gorgeous!! Thank you for sharing it. I want a tiny house just like this …so you designed? Truly stunning ~ ❤

  3. Sorry that’s way too much money! I can get a really really decent fifth wheel toy hauler with a second bathroom for $30 to $40 k with everything you’ve got and more.

  4. Well said. Am 73, will be retired soon and am considering a tiny home. Your design is beautiful. Thank you Don.

  5. Lots of design thought, function, storage and great aesthetics in this tiny home. Impressive bath and stand up bedroom area. I didn’t catch whether the lot is owned or rented; small shed is a nice feature. Either way, what a blessing to enjoy oneself both at home and while away.

  6. Indigo River is my favorite tiny builder! Peter will create pretty much anything you want. Excellent!

  7. I loved everything about the house and I would only make 2 changes. There has to be a word better than small when talking about changes.
    1. I would get an induction stove.
    2. After much thought I would get either a cat or a dog or both, depending..

  8. Really GREAT looking place you have there, Don. Your explanation of options chosen are helpful for some plans we’re making (w/d, mini split..). Thank you & God bless you brother!
