Life in a micro studio! From NYC apt to California Tiny Home

Sung was paying $4500 a month for a small apartment in New York City, so when she decided to move to Santa Monica, California, she downsized into a Tiny House the size of a parking space. Now she pays only $1600 a month for rent and utilities, saving her thousands of dollars every month. While this still may seem like a lot of money per month for the space, you can’t find a home more affordable in the area.

  1. This house seems so cold and hard and stark. So many bare, featureless walls, inside and out. All the corners are sharp and square, all the lines straight and unyielding.

It really needs some softness – rugs, tapestries or pictures on the walls, a little sofa, blankets, rounded corners, cane/wicker/bamboo, etc.

I could probably adapt to the size of the space if I had to, but the hardness and coldness would really bum me out.

I’m not a fan of that kind of open, single-rail wardrobe, either – they look cheap and flimsy, and you end up with dusty clothes. You’d be better off with a small, enclosed wardrobe unit, which would provide some extra storage.

I don’t get claustrophobic, but even I’m looking askance at that “bedroom”… and changing the bedding would definitely be a pain.

I like that there’s an outdoor space, but yet again – so much concrete makes it feel cold and hard and kind of like a prison yard. Needs more plants and more colour!

  2. I live in Malibu and I can’t believe she’s living in a space like this. This is just ridiculous

  3. Absolutely LOVE your tiny home and how you have made it your own!!! Absolutely Perfect!!!

  4. She is a remote worker basically paying a high mortgage in decent areas in many states. And $700 in utilities? This is not a good investment.
