VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
Meet Jaylena, a full‑time van lifer who built her dream home on wheels to travel the country with her daughter and experience true freedom. In this in‑depth van tour, she reveals how she designed and built her DIY camper van in under six months, the lessons she learned from living on the road, and the smart upgrades she plans for the future.
This custom van conversion combines minimalist living, smart storage solutions, off‑grid power, and family‑friendly functionality. Jaylena walks through every detail of her build, including her compact kitchen with a hideaway sink, dual water tanks, 12V refrigerator with freezer, camp stove setup, and creative pull‑out pantry. She explains what works, what doesn’t, and what she would change if she built it again — essential insight for anyone planning a van build or considering van life.
Her living area doubles as a workspace with swivel seats, a lagoon table desk, hidden storage, emergency backup power, and space for travel essentials. Safety was a top priority, especially designing a secure seat for her daughter, and she shares why she may redesign that section for even more functionality and storage.
In the back of the van, Jaylena’s elevated bed platform maximizes storage capacity while still creating a comfortable sleeping space with a 12‑inch memory foam mattress, overhead cabinets, ventilation fans, and climate control solutions. She also shows her closet system, memory wall, heating setup, and under‑bed storage for tools, gear, and emergency supplies.
Powered entirely by a solar‑charged power station system with alternator charging and shore power capability, this off‑grid van setup demonstrates practical, real‑world van life solutions — not just aesthetic builds. Jaylena also discusses bathroom options, including her portable biodegradable toilet system, and how she manages daily living logistics like laundry, cooking, power, and repairs on the road.
Before this van, Jaylena lived in multiple rigs — from a $2,800 starter van to a short bus conversion and several DIY builds she sold for profit. She shares how those experiences helped her finally afford her dream van and why van life has been one of the most empowering decisions of her life.
If you’re researching van life, DIY van conversions, off‑grid living, or minimalist lifestyles, this tour offers real data, honest insights, and practical design ideas you can actually use.

17:01 What She Has Learned in Van Life
Jaylena, I love your van. It makes me happy when people can figure out ways to live with fewer rules and regulations. As you said, you have learned a great deal about yourself. I also appreciate you sharing with us what you plan to do about the stove and finding more room for storage.
Use your former toilet box for storage. It can also double as an extra seat for visitors.
My daughter suffered from car sickness. A pediatrician recommended I slice a lemon and leave the rind on. The rind reduces the bitter taste of the lemon. My daughter would eat the whole slice and she was comfortable with the driving. I was in the military and driving across the US. She is now in her 50s, still gets car sickness if she doesn’t use the lemon slices. Lemon slices also help clear toxins from your system after walking through a parking garage. I’ve dealt with that one myself and does really work.
Kids can’t sit in the front seats until they are 9 and a certain weight & height. ❤❤ Ember will be in her seat for a long time yet. ❤❤
I need a power station. Which one do you have?
