People are building tiny homes on top of lava: & here’s why!

Jade has lived on lava in Hawaii for more than 15 years with her young son. In this episode, she takes us on a tour of the Phoenix Tiny House, an off-grid vacation home & rental that is built on top of a lava field. She talks about the significance of this landscape, spiritually and ecologically, and why she chooses to live here. We also meet the tiny house builder, Will Beilharz, who speaks about the challenges of building on lava and how it influenced the design.

  1. Beautiful little hale. I WISH the area under the kitchen sink wasn’t the opposite of the rest of the homes esthetic. There are so many solutions….can’t believe it wasn’t addressed, even if only for this video. Auwé

  2. Living under the radar of the authorities. No building permit, not built to building codes, no permitted septic system.

  3. Got up in heaven knows that that woman is insane serving false gods also risking her and her son’s life and the other people there to learn they need some serious psychological help

  4. Having direct ancestral ties to Puna, the first thing that immediately caught my attention was that you claimed to be a Konohiki of your dwelling. Who was it that appointed you as a Konohiki? What’s Konohiki to you, and the kuleana that comes with that title?

As a kanaka ʻōiwi, I know for certain that the Konohiki who were a class of chief who had great kuleana.

    Land management:

The Konohiki were responsible for the land, water, and human resources of their assigned area, called an ahupuaʻa a. They oversaw the distribution of land, agricultural use, and maintenance.
    Resource management:

The Konohiki ensured that resources were used responsibly and sustainably. They monitored resource use and regulated access to meet the needs of the community while preserving the environment.

Tax collection: The Konohiki collected taxes and agricultural and aquacultural products.

    Tribute collection:

The Konohiki made sure the right amounts of gifts and tributes to the aliʻi were made at the right times.

    Military service:

The konohiki supplied armies in case of war.

    Labor:

The Konohiki supplied laborers for state enterprises such as heiau and fishpond construction.

Is this all who you claim to be?

I also noticed that you have other foreign cultural traditions and customary beliefs which aren’t of Hawaiʻi. Are you aware that we’ve already had our own cultural traditions and customary beliefs here for millennia???

ʻO wai nā inoa o kou mau mākua? He kanaka ʻōiwi lākou?

I hea ʻoe i hānau ai?

    He kanaka ʻōiwi ʻoe?

  5. From her type of personality… it was a bitter separation. I have a feeling Will taught her everything she rambled about her place.
